Why are the prices of hiring a DJ so "high"?

The Disc Jockey market has been growing in the past 10 years. In 1995 alone, the average cost of hiring a wedding DJ was around $465, according to djzone.net. 2014's average cost of a DJ was $1200. That is a significant jump from $465. Keep in mind, there's a 19 years of gap which inflation can be a factor. Setting inflation aside, we are seeing more demand for DJs for weddings and events.

Here are couple reasons why the price of hiring a DJ has been going up and it will continue to rise.

1.) Disc Jockey is a professional trade.

When a person dedicates his or her life to performing with a recorded music, he or she must make a living off of the trade. Because of the full-time commitment from these DJs, they are mastering the art and the science of providing a flawless entertainment for your event. Reasonably to believe, if a DJ is spending 8-10 hours mastering his or her trade and operating the professionalism as a full time job, then it is fair to say that the DJ should be paid as a full time worker in the market. Same can be said about the hobby DJ who may spend less than 10-15 hours a week mastering his or her art.

2.) Cost of doing business has gone up.

Because these full time, professional and master DJs have nearly perfected the art of performing music, there are other factors that drive the cost of a DJ up. For instance, the DJs will have to invest money in high quality music, he or she may have to invest in transportation to get to your event, the DJ has to purchase and update its equipment so that he or she can satisfy your needs. All of this investment needs an appropriate return. Some DJs spend nearly $50,000 to $100,000 in equipment alone. To satisfy this kind of an investment, it is fair to say that these DJs charge $5,000 to $10,000 for their services.

3.) Every DJ is unique just as you are.

Since everyone in this planet is unique, there's a reason to believe that every DJ company out there have differences. To most people, they may look all the same but look closely. You will discover that every DJ has a preference to music style, creativity, set-ups and all sorts of combination of skills that they may employ. Due to this diversity, most DJs are beginning to charge a premium to their service simply because other DJs can't provide what one may can.

We will continually to see DJ prices fluctuate in the future. The technological changes is allowing DJs to provide even more sophisticated and diversed services to your events. So brace yourselves! Prices will change yet again in the next 10 years!
